Also simply known as lapis, lapis lazuli is a blue metamorphic rock that is composed of multiple minerals.  The blue is derived from the presence of lazurite, which is a blue silicate material from the sodalite group.  Some specimens of lapis contain calcite and pyrite in addition the lazurite.  To be called lapis, a stone must contain at least 25% lazurite.  Calcite gives lapis the appearance of white layers or mottling.  It can also be so finely intermixed with lazurite that it produces a denim color, which is called denim lapis.  The gold color seen in many specimens of lapis is pyrite.
The leading source of lapis is Afghanistan, where it has been mined for thousands of years. There are other countries that also produce significant amounts of lapis, including Chile, Russia, Canada, Argentina and Pakistan. Small amounts of lapis have also been mined in California, Colorado, and Arizona.
Lapis appears in many Egyptian archeological sites that date back to around 3000 BC.  Powdered lapis was used as a cosmetic and a pigment.  Lapis was used historically as a pigment by the Old Masters for ultramarine blue in painting.  Famous paintings that this ultramarine paint was used in include The Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh, Girl With a Pearl Earring by Johannes Vermeer, as well as many others.
