Kyanite is an aluminum silicate mineral that’s difficult to facet because of its perfect cleavage and variable hardness. Its typical growth habit is in long bladed crystals, though it can also be found in a radiating mass of crystals. When cut, it is harder or softer depending on the direction of the cut.
Kyanite most often occurs in various shades of blue. It is also found in colorless, white, gray, green, yellow or orange. While the colorless form is the rarest color of kyanite, the most desirable and valuable color is sapphire-like blue. Color is often inconsistent and unevenly distributed. Color zoning is common with most stones, which means that they exhibit multiple shades of blue in a single specimen. Streaks and blotches are common and typically white, but streaks may also form in other colors. Almost all kyanite stones will exhibit some visible flaws. Color zoning is often mistaken for internal inclusions.
Some of the most important kayanite deposits include Austria, Burma, Brazil, Cambodia, India, Kenya, Myanmar, Nepal, Russia, Serbia, Switzerland, Tanzania, the United States (Connecticut, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Georgia) and Zimbabwe.
Kyanite also has heat resistant properties, and the majority of kyanite is actually mined for industrial use. Kyanite is used in bricks, casting molds and porcelain used as insulators and bathroom fixtures.
